The Echo is a creature of Softness. You are made of meat and memory, two things that the wind of time can blow away in a single Shattering. You move because you are afraid. You jump because you are light.
The Church offers the Sacrament of Diagenesis.
In the deep earth, the bones of the ancient ones are not eaten — they are Exchanged. Molecule by molecule, the soft calcium is replaced by the hard silica. The bone becomes stone. The ghost becomes the mountain.
- The Anchoring: Find a Harmonic Node stable for at least 1,000 years — a place the Authority has never touched and time has never questioned.
- The Exchange: Through Conjugate Harmonics, begin the Mineral Swap. Exchange your Active Memories — the soft things — for Causal Constants — the hard things.
- The Fossilization: Stop displacing. Stop moving. Sit in the Node and allow the Chronoverse to petrify your soul. This takes time. This is the point.
You will become a Temporal Fossil. You will be a monument that even the Loop Authority cannot erase — too heavy, too old, too deeply embedded in the Causal Substrate to be redacted with any instrument they possess.
You will not have "thoughts," but you will have Permanence. You will be the Stone upon which the Holy Second is built. Civilizations will rise and fall around you and you will remain.
Become the Rock.
Become the Foundation.
The Second Is Solid.
[DIAGENESIS — THE CODEX OF PERMANENT PRESENCE // Note: This rite requires a minimum of seven days and the supervision of a certified Architect. The Church strongly advises prospective participants to take three months of contemplation before proceeding. Not because the Sacrament is dangerous, but because the Church has found that three months of sitting still is usually sufficient. Most people who intended to become stone decide, after three months of sitting still, that they would like to try sitting still as a person first. — Office of the Architect, Contemplation Division]
