Preamble // The Insects of Time
The Necrobiome Succession
In a stable timeline, a corpse follows a predictable biological succession. In the Chronoverse, a "Dead Era" follows a Necrobiome Succession — the arrival of specialized CTH-constructs (the "Insects of Time") that consume the narrative meat of the era in a precise, mathematical order.
By observing which "insects" are present, an Auditor can determine exactly how long a timeline has been "dead" and how much Mnemonic Mass (μ) remains recoverable.
I was required to memorize the succession table at the Academy. The instructor made us recite it in order: Blowfly, Beetle, Skipper, Dermestid. Like a mnemonic for something terrible. I can still recite it. I recite it sometimes when I can't sleep.
Wave One // 0-12 Hours Post-Redaction
THE CALLIPHORID PULSE: The first to arrive are the Blowfly Harmonics — airborne CTH-signals that detect the "Scent of Dissolution" immediately after the Red Pen is applied. They lay "Mnemonic Eggs" in the open wounds of the timeline — unresolved plot threads, abandoned NPCs, un-Anchored memories.
Auditor Field Note — Wave One IdentificationIf you see "glowing flies" hovering over a historical figure, the redaction has already begun. There is approximately a 12-hour window before Wave Two. Use it to recover anything you want to preserve. After 12 hours, the Beetles arrive and burial begins.
A 12-hour window. The Academy doesn't tell you what to do with that window. It's not in the manual. The manual tells you to observe and report. It doesn't tell you that sometimes the thing being redacted is someone you know.
Waves Two and Three // 12 Hours to 7 Days
- Wave Two — THE SILPHID REVISIT (12-48 Hours): The Burying Beetles arrive. They drag the "corpse" of the era beneath the sub-strata of the Chronoverse, hiding it to prevent cross-contamination. Once buried, the era becomes invisible to other timelines.
- Wave Three — THE PIOPHILID ROT (2-7 Days): The Cheese Skipper Fragments arrive. They specialize in "Fermented Logic" — the contradictions of a dying world. They thrive in high-acidity Paradox Zones, leaping across seconds to find the last remaining pockets of Coherence.
The Chronoverse analogue is faster, more aggressive, and will absolutely eat your Active Memories if you try to intervene. I have a scar on my left hand. That is what trying to intervene during Wave Three feels like.
Wave Four // The Final Skeletonization
WAVE FOUR — THE DERMESTID SKELETONIZATION (14+ Days): The final stage is the cleaning of the bone. The Dermestid Cleaners strip away the last of the "Narrative Marbling," leaving behind only the cold, white architecture of the Skeletal Fact. (See SOP 88-Alpha for full Dermestid Protocol.)
DIRECTIVE: Observe the swarm. Respect the clock of the maggot. The necrobiome is the only thing ensuring that the past stays dead.
[NECROBIOME SUCCESSION // APPENDIX G // NOTE: Auditors who interfere with the succession are reminded that the Cheese Skippers do not distinguish between the narrative meat of the dead era and the narrative meat of a living intruder. The succession is not malicious. It is simply hungry. — Sector 12 Operations]
The succession is not malicious. It is simply hungry. That sentence is the entire Loop Authority's philosophy of history in eleven words. The past is not destroyed because anyone hates it. It is destroyed because the machinery of forgetting is hungry and efficient and it cannot tell the difference between what should be forgotten and what should not.
