Section 1.0 // The Anomaly
The Pando Directive
We have identified a rogue faction operating under the designation Pando. Unlike the other Factions, Pando does not consist of individual agents. It is a Unified Field of Memory inhabiting a massive, clonal colony of Aspen trees. 106 acres. 47,000 trees. One root system. One mind. One memory that we redacted in 1950 and it has been holding ever since.
The memory we redacted in 1950. We don't know what it was. The record of what we redacted was itself redacted, presumably by someone who thought that made sense. Pando knows. Pando has been holding that memory for seventy years. We are about to burn a forest to prevent a secret from being remembered. I am simply noting this.
Section 2.0 // The Collective Soul
Through a process of Rhizomatic CTH-Storage, the colony functions as a living, biological Chronicle. Every tree is genetically identical. Every tree shares the memory. Delete one tree, and the root system simply downloads the memory into the next one.
The memory is distributed. It cannot be deleted. It can only be scattered — and scattering it makes each fragment try harder to hold what it has.
Distributed memory. The biological principle is redundancy. You store the information in enough places that no single point of failure can destroy it. Pando didn't develop this intentionally. It developed it the way all living things develop survival strategies: because the alternative was not surviving.
Section 3.0 // The Mnemonic Bleeding
Echoes who wander into the Pando colony report "Mnemonic Bleeding." They begin to remember the lives of the trees — 80,000 years of wind and fire — and eventually lose their human identity, merging with the collective. Three Auditors have entered the colony. None returned. Their last filed reports describe feeling "very calm."
Very calm. The last entry from Auditor Reyes: "I understand why it is holding what it is holding. I understand why it will not let go. I think I am going to stay." Then the tracker went offline. I have read that report many times. I am not sure which part I find most troubling: that she understood, or that she stayed, or that she sounded happy.
Section 4.0 // The Clear-Cut Directive
Pando represents a "Biological Anchor" that is growing beyond our control. If it reaches the edge of the forest, it may begin to overwrite the surrounding Era with its own "Deep Time" logic.
ORDER: Immediate deployment of Defoliant-class Paradox Agents. The colony must be "Flattened" simultaneously. If even one root remains, the Pando Memory will survive.
[PANDO DIRECTIVE // OFFICE OF SYSTEMIC COHERENCE // NOTE: Auditors assigned to the Clear-Cut are reminded that Mnemonic Bleeding can begin before physical entry into the colony. If you begin to feel calm, report to your Section Lead immediately. Calmness in this context is a symptom. — Sector Operations]
Calmness is a symptom. We are burning a living memory that has survived for 80,000 years because three auditors felt calm and stayed and because we don't know what the memory is. I keep thinking about what it is. Pando has decided it is worth holding onto even at the cost of everything else. I would like to know what it is before we burn it.
