Project Hydrozoa: The Reversion Shard
The biological mechanism of Turritopsis dohrnii, the "immortal jellyfish," involves reverting from a sexually mature medusa back to a polyp state under stress. Project Hydrozoa synthesized a CTH-frequency equivalent designed to grant Echoes a "Biological Reset." However, the cost of physiological de-aging is a total systemic erasure of Mnemonic Mass (μ).
The Authority authorized this research. They came to me. They funded it. They told me it was for Echoes suffering from "excessive displacement trauma." I believed them. I believed them because I wanted the tool to exist. That is not an excuse. It is an explanation.
Section 2.0 // The Reversion Shard
The Shard is a crystalline CTH-emitter that vibrates at the exact frequency of a zygote's potential. When applied to a human Echo, the device initiates a cellular "Rewind."
- Phase A — Cellular Inversion: The body's telomeres are retroactively lengthened. The Subject physically regresses at a rate of one year per hour of exposure.
- Phase B — Mnemonic Decoupling: As the brain shrinks and neural pathways simplify, the Echo's Chronicle begins to "leak." The older, more complex memories are the first to be digested.
"Digested" is my word. I chose it deliberately. I wanted the mechanism to sound like what it is. The Authority suggested I use "archived" in the final report. I compromised on "processed." I have not forgiven myself for that compromise.
Section 3.0 // Experimental Results
Observation Log — Subject 16-AlfaT+1hr: Grey hair reverted. Subject reported loss of all memories regarding the 2012 Shattering. T+4hrs: Physical age approximately 10 years. Subject lost ability to recognize the lead researcher. Final State: Subject achieved "Pure State" (Age 5). All Locked Memories destroyed. Anchor Strength (Ψ) reached 1.0.
She didn't recognize me at T+4 hours. She looked at me the way a child looks at a stranger — curious, slightly wary, not frightened because she had not yet learned what there was to be frightened of. Her Anchor was perfect. She had no self to anchor. She reached up and touched my face with small hands and said "are you my doctor?"
Section 4.0 // Conclusion
The Reversion Shard allows an Echo to escape the Authority's red pen by literally becoming a person who has not yet committed a crime against time. However, a child with the eyes of a thousand-year-old traveler is a biological horror.
Use of the Shard is restricted to "Total Identity Collapse" cases. If the history is gone, the child is merely a waste of CTH-potential.
A waste of CTH-potential. That is what Subject 16-Alfa became in the official record. I wrote those words. They are in my handwriting. They are the worst thing I have ever written. I still know her original name. I am the only person left who does. I write it in the margins of all my other files so that it cannot be lost.
